Gli Angelic Upstarts si formano nel 1977 a South Shields, un sobborgo nell’Inghilterra del nord est. Una “punk band della classe operaia” con un attitudine fortemente anti-fascista. Cos'altro si può dire di questo gruppo leggendario? Influenzati dai Clash e dai Sex Pistols, gli Angelic Upstarts sono fusione di sentimento di classe ed istinto musicale, un’ondata di contenuti proletari e ribelli. La line up originale vedeva Mensi alla voce, Mond alla chitarra, Steve Forsten al basso e Decca Wade alla batteria.
È il 1978 quando lanciano la loro crociata punk col singolo autoprodotto ‘The Murder of Liddle Towers’. 500 copie che distribuiscono da soli ai propri concerti e nei negozietti di dischi della zona. Ben presto questo singolo viene acquisito dalla “Small Wonder Records” che lo distribuisce a livello nazionale. Gli attacchi alla brutalità della polizia gli assicurano un mecenate di tutto rispetto, Jimmy Pursey degli Sham 69. Nel 1979 esce il loro L.P. ‘Teenage Warning’. L’incondizionato modo di porsi e la denuncia del razzismo – una presa di posizione particolarmente ammirevole in un periodo in cui altre ‘skinhead bands’ flirtavano con elementi d’estrema destra – fecero dell’album un classico. Il singolo ‘I’m An Upstart’ e ‘Teenage Warning’ (entrambi del 1979) si concentrano sulla situazione della classe operaia. Dopo una serie di album di successo e singoli minori, si sciolgono nel 1983. “Angel Dust” (The Collected Highs, 1983) è una compilation dei loro lavori migliori.
Nel corso degli anni la band si è riformata e sciolta parecchie volte. Tra gli ex membri si ricordano i bassisti Ronnie Wooden, Glyn Warren, Tony Feedback, Ronnie Rocker e Max Splodge (che hanno anche avuto una parte alla batteria). Tra i batteristi Sticks (che poi passò ai Cockney Rejects), Paul Thompson (ex Roxy Music) e Chris White. Decca Wade si riunì al gruppo per qualche anno per poi andarsene di nuovo. Brian Hayes originariamente era la seconda chitarra finché Mond se ne andò lasciandolo come chitarra solista.
Recentemente Mensi ha rinnovato gli Upstarts con una line up all-star: Tony Van Frater (Red Alert) alla chitarra, Gaz Stoker (Red London) al basso, Lainey (Leatherface) alla batteria, è questa la line-up che registra il primo album da studio degli Angelic Upstarts, ‘Sons of Spartacus’.
Si rivolgono oggi ad una nuova generazione di scontenti working-class punks, ancora in sintonia con la causa anti-fascista.

THE SNAKES
A Gang with a Band!
E’ successo in occasione del primo concerto dei METEORS al TRANSILVANIA Live di Milano che un’ idea balenò nelle teste di Paul Fenech e degli SNAKES, registrare qualche traccia nel suo nuovo pro-studio MaDDog a Duisburg (DE).
Nel 2008 negli studi MaDDog è stato registrato il primo album degli SNAKES – MONDO SERPE presentato il 20 dicembre 2008 a Saarbrucken (DE) in un’ indimenticabile serata chiusa sul palco dai METEORS.
Gli SNAKES in un breve periodo hanno iniziato a far conoscere il proprio nome nella scena underground europea suonando con band come THE METEORS, THE BOYS, TV SMITH, PETER AND THE TEST TUBE BABIES, DEMENTED ARE GO, FRENZY, QUAKES, LONG TALL TEXANS, CARAVANS trovando i primi veri successi.
Gli SNAKES sono una famiglia unita, fatta di veri amici sempre fieri e a testa alta, pronti ad avvelenare questo fottuto mondo.
